Turkish for Your First Semester at a Turkish University

A C1 certificate means you can follow most lectures. It doesn't promise you'll understand your field's vocabulary or your professor's speaking style on day one. The good news is that most first-semester trouble comes from a small set of things you can prepare for: the words for registration, attendance and exams, the way lecturers signal what matters, the instructions on an exam paper, and the tone of an email to a professor. Learn the system words in your first week, because missing a deadline or an attendance limit costs more than a misheard sentence.
Regulations differ between universities. We use Istanbul University's regulation as the worked example and tell you what to look up in your own.
Why lectures feel harder than your C1 exam
The Council of Europe describes C1 listening in the CEFR Companion Volume. As a member of a live audience, a C1 listener "can follow most lectures, discussions and debates with relative ease." The overall C1 listening descriptor adds that you may need to confirm occasional details, especially when the variety of speech is unfamiliar to you. Your professor's accent, speed and favourite jokes all count.
The note-taking scale is more demanding. At C1 you can take detailed notes on lectures in your own field and decide what to leave out as the lecture goes on. Exams like TÖMER and TYS test general topics, so the vocabulary of anatomy, civil engineering or tax law usually arrives after the certificate. The gap is mostly about subject terminology, and a few weeks of steady reading in your field closes a lot of it.
Lecturers also speak, and spoken Turkish differs from the written Turkish of exam texts. You'll hear yapcaz for yapacağız and geliyom for geliyorum, plus fillers like şey, hani and işte. Our guide to spoken Turkish vs written Turkish covers these reductions in detail.
The words that run your semester
These are the terms you'll meet on the student portal, in the academic calendar (akademik takvim) and in your department's announcements. TDK's Güncel Türkçe Sözlük lists vize as a synonym of ara sınav, so **in a university, vize means a midterm exam**. It has nothing to do with your visa, however much the word looks like it.
| Turkish | Meaning | You'll hear |
|---|---|---|
| ders kaydı | course registration | Ders kaydı ne zaman başlıyor? |
| ekle-sil | add/drop period | Ekle-sil haftasında bu dersi bırakabilirsin. |
| danışman | academic advisor | Danışmanın kaydını onaylaması lazım. |
| ödev | assignment, homework | Ödevin teslim tarihi cuma. |
| vize, ara sınav | midterm exam | Vize hangi konuları kapsıyor? |
| final | final exam | Final notu ortalamaya daha çok etki ediyor. |
| bütünleme | resit exam | Finalden kalırsan bütünlemeye girersin. |
| mazeret sınavı | exam for an excused absence | Raporum var, mazeret sınavına girebilir miyim? |
| devamsızlık | absence | Devamsızlıktan kalmak istemiyorum. |
| AKTS | ECTS credits | Bu ders kaç AKTS? |
| not ortalaması | grade point average | Not ortalamam düştü. |
What the regulation says about attendance and exams
Istanbul University's undergraduate regulation, published in the Resmî Gazete on 28 September 2025, shows how these words work in practice:
- Article 19 requires attendance of at least 70% of a course you take for the first time, and at least 80% of practical work. A student who misses more can't sit the final and fails the course. Students call this devamsızlıktan kalmak.
- Article 20 requires at least one midterm per course and sets the final exam's share of the course grade between 50% and 70%, decided by each faculty's board.
- Article 24 defines bütünleme as the exam after the final for students who met the conditions but couldn't sit the final, or who got FF, DD or DC. A mazeret sınavı replaces a missed midterm if you submit a petition (dilekçe) and the board accepts your excuse.
- Article 4 defines the danışman as the faculty member assigned to help you with your studies and course registration.
Your university's rules may use other percentages. Search for your university's name plus ön lisans ve lisans eğitim öğretim yönetmeliği and read the articles on devam and sınavlar before the first week ends.
How to follow a lecture in Turkish
Lecturers flag structure and importance with a small set of phrases. Once you can hear them, you'll know when to pick up your pen.
- Geçen hafta ... konusunu görmüştük. (Last week we covered ...) The lecture is linking back.
- Bugün üç konuya bakacağız. (Today we'll look at three topics.) Write down the outline.
- Şimdi şuna geçelim. (Now let's move on to this.) A new section starts.
- Bunun altını çizin. / Bunu not alın. (Underline this. / Write this down.)
- Bu sınavda çıkar. (This will come up in the exam.) Mark it in your notes every time.
- Kısacası / Özetle (In short / To sum up.) The main point follows.
Before each class, read the week's topic in the syllabus (ders izlencesi) and skim the slides. If you hear an unknown term twice, write it down as it sounds and look it up after class. Ask a classmate for their notes in the first week, before you need them for the midterm.
Taking notes fast
Use the abbreviations Turkish students already use. Most come from standard written Turkish:
- vb. (ve benzeri, and similar) and vs. (vesaire, etc.)
- örn. (örneğin, for example)
- bkz. (bakınız, see)
- yy. (yüzyıl, century)
- s. (sayfa, page)
Writing explanations in your own language is fine, but keep the term itself in Turkish, because the exam will use the Turkish term.

Reading exam instructions
Exam papers use the polite plural imperative, ending in -(y)ınız / -(y)iniz / -(y)unuz / -(y)ünüz by vowel harmony. Misreading the instruction verb costs more points than a grammar mistake in your answer.
| Instruction | What it asks |
|---|---|
| Aşağıdaki soruları cevaplayınız. | Answer the questions below. |
| Doğru seçeneği işaretleyiniz. | Mark the correct option. |
| Kısaca açıklayınız. | Explain briefly. |
| Örneklerle açıklayınız. | Explain with examples. |
| Karşılaştırınız. | Compare. |
| Tartışınız. | Discuss, with arguments for and against. |
| Yorumlayınız. | Interpret, give your reading of it. |
| Sorulardan üçünü seçerek cevaplayınız. | Choose three of the questions and answer them. |
Also watch for the time and scoring lines: Sınav süresi 90 dakikadır (the exam lasts 90 minutes) and Her soru 20 puandır (each question is worth 20 points). If you don't understand an instruction, ask the invigilator (gözetmen) right away: Affedersiniz, bu soruda ne isteniyor?
Emailing a professor
Turkish academic email is more formal than English. Address professors as Hocam, which students use for any lecturer, or by full title: Prof. Dr., Doç. Dr. or Dr. Öğr. Üyesi, followed by the name. Always give your course code and student number, since a professor may teach hundreds of students. A short model:
Konu: TAR101: Vize sınavı hakkında Sayın Hocam, TAR101 dersinizi alan 2026123456 numaralı öğrenciyim. Geçen hafta raporlu olduğum için vize sınavına giremedim. Mazeret sınavı için dilekçemi fakülteye teslim ettim. Sınavın tarihini öğrenebilir miyim? İlginiz için teşekkür ederim. Saygılarımla, Amina Rahimi
The polite questions are worth memorising: ... öğrenebilir miyim? (may I learn ...?), Ofis saatinizde görüşmemiz mümkün mü? (could we meet in your office hours?), Uygun olduğunuz bir zamanı belirtir misiniz? (could you name a time that suits you?). A bare Merhaba reads as too casual for a first email, and the request should come after you've said who you are. Our business Turkish email guide covers the same register for work.
Group work and presentations
Group projects (grup ödevi) and presentations (sunum) are where your speaking matters most. These phrases cover most planning conversations:
- Kim hangi kısmı yapıyor? (Who's doing which part?)
- Ben literatür kısmını üstlenebilirim. (I can take the literature part.)
- Teslim tarihinden iki gün önce birleştirelim mi? (Shall we put it together two days before the deadline?)
Classmates speak faster and more casually than lecturers, so say early that you're still getting used to Turkish. Most people slow down once they know. In a presentation, signposting phrases help both you and the audience: İlk olarak ..., İkinci olarak ..., Son olarak ..., Sorularınız varsa alabilirim.
A first-month plan
- Week 1: read your university's attendance and exam articles, find your danışman, and write the add/drop and midterm dates into your calendar.
- Weeks 1 to 2: build a glossary of 15 to 20 field terms per course from the syllabus and slides.
- Weeks 2 to 4: rewrite your notes in full Turkish sentences on the day of each lecture. That's also your midterm revision.
- Week 4: write one practice answer for each course using the instruction verbs above, and check it against the slides.
If you're still short of C1, how long it takes to learn Turkish covers the timeline.
Frequently asked questions
Is C1 enough to study in Turkish?
For most universities it's the admission level, and the CEFR describes C1 as following most lectures with relative ease. Expect the first weeks to be hard anyway, mainly because of field terminology and the professor's speaking style.
What happens if I miss too many classes?
At Istanbul University, missing more than the limit (70% attendance for theory, 80% for practical work) means you can't sit the final and you fail the course. Other universities set their own limits in their regulations.
What is the difference between vize, final and bütünleme?
Vize is the midterm, final is the end-of-semester exam, and bütünleme is the resit after the final. At Istanbul University the final or resit counts for 50% to 70% of the course grade.
How should I address a professor in Turkish?
Use Hocam in speech and Sayın Hocam or the full title (Prof. Dr., Doç. Dr., Dr. Öğr. Üyesi) in emails. Include your course code and student number.
