Ceylan Meriç teaches Turkish one-to-one online. She is a native speaker with an MA in Teaching Turkish, and for 8 years she has taught every level from A1 to C2. A private lesson with her is planned for one person: your level, the Turkish you actually need, and a pace you can keep up.

Why learn with Turkly

  • A tutor trained to teach Turkish to foreigners. Ceylan's MA is in teaching Turkish, so when you mix up gidiyorum and giderim, she can explain the difference and when each one is used.
  • One tutor from A1 to C2. She teaches complete beginners as well as C1 and C2 learners, so you can stay with the same person as your level goes up.
  • Explanations in English or Turkish. Beginners get grammar explained in English. As your Turkish grows, more of the lesson moves into Turkish.
  • Experience with the goals people bring: TÖMER and TYS exams, the C1 that universities ask for, daily life in Türkiye, business Turkish, and lessons for children and teens.
  • A free trial before you commit. The trial lesson costs nothing.

One student wrote to her: "I started Turkish with you, and now I read and write everything thanks to you." You can also watch her teach short lessons on Instagram at @turkishlessonstr, a verified account with more than 13,000 followers.

How it works

  1. A free trial lesson of 20 to 30 minutes. Ceylan checks your level and asks what you need Turkish for. If you'd like a head start, take the free level test before the trial.
  2. A plan for your goal. You leave with a route from where you are now to the level you need, whether that means getting through a pharmacy visit without stress or writing a C1 essay.
  3. Regular lessons online. Each lesson lasts 50 to 60 minutes. You get materials for every topic and practice to do between lessons, so the next lesson picks up where your homework left off.

What changes when lessons are one-to-one

In a group class, the lesson moves at the speed of the room. In a private lesson it moves at yours. If the accusative case needs three lessons before it clicks, it gets three lessons. If you already read well and your problem is speaking, the time goes to speaking.

You also speak far more, because every question in the lesson is yours to answer and every mistake gets noticed. Ceylan can pick out the mistakes that matter at your level and leave the small ones for later, so you aren't stopped on every word.

The content follows your goal as well. Someone moving to Istanbul needs the conversations they'll have with a landlord, at the bank and with neighbours, the kind collected in our guide to Turkish for living in Turkey. Someone preparing for TÖMER needs exam tasks and timed writing. Someone with Turkish colleagues needs the emails, meetings and calls covered in Business Turkish. Whichever of these you are, the lessons stick to the Turkish you'll use.

Private lessons are a good fit if:

  • you have a deadline, such as a university start date or a move to Türkiye
  • you've tried apps or group classes and keep stalling at the same level
  • you understand quite a lot of Turkish but freeze when you have to speak
  • your week changes often and a fixed group time doesn't work
  • you're preparing for TÖMER, TYS or a C1 requirement

If you'd rather learn with other people, Ceylan teaches group lessons too. The online Turkish classes page explains how the course and the levels work.

Price

Prices aren't published on the site. The trial lesson is free. After you send a request, Ceylan replies within 24 hours with prices and the lesson options that suit your goal, and you decide from there.

Frequently asked questions

Are online lessons as good as lessons in person?

Listening, speaking, reading and writing with feedback all work well on a video call. You skip the commute, and you can learn with a native tutor from any country. During the lesson you and Ceylan work from the same materials.

I'm a complete beginner. Can I start?

Yes. Ceylan teaches from A1, and at the start she explains in English, so you won't be lost. If you already know some Turkish, the trial or the free level test shows where you should begin.

How does scheduling work across time zones?

Lessons are online, so you can join from anywhere. Put your time zone and the days that suit you in your request, and Ceylan will reply with times that fit.

What do I need for a lesson?

A computer or tablet with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection and a quiet place to sit. Headphones help. You don't need to buy a book before the trial.

Are lessons explained in English or Turkish?

Ceylan explains in English or Turkish, and those are the only two languages she teaches in. Beginners usually start with English explanations, and more of the lesson moves into Turkish as you improve.

How do I start?

Fill in the lesson request form on this page with what you need Turkish for and when you're free. Ceylan will get back to you within 24 hours to arrange your free trial.

Meet Ceylan Meriç

Ceylan is a native Turkish speaker with an MA in Teaching Turkish and 8 years of teaching behind her. She teaches adults, teens and children online, in private and group lessons.

In your trial lesson she finds out where your Turkish is now and what you need it for. Every lesson after that works toward it. For an exam, that means the tasks you'll be marked on; for a move, the conversations you'll have with a landlord or a doctor.
